Government-Sponsored Enterprise (GSE)

GSEs, like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are financial services corporations created by the U.S. government to enhance the flow of credit in the housing market. They buy mortgages from lenders, bundle them into mortgage-backed securities, and sell them to investors.
